Karl Marlantes is back with Cold Victory [available this week in paperback], a novel about community, family, and skiing. Set in 1947, Cold Victory tells the story of two young military attachĂ©s who drunkenly challenge each other to a cross-country wilderness race. Since this is Finland, that country is more than unhospitable, it’s enemy terrain. Naturally, word of this race gets out (the pair are Russian and American), and the whole thing becomes a political hot potato. Freedom vs. Communism! But, in Marlantes’s hands, it’s much more than a geopolitical thriller. Recommended.
