Third Place Books in Lake Forest Park, Seward Park, and Ravenna in Seattle raised $7,488.00 for the Refugee and Immigrant Center for Education and Legal Services (RAICES) to help reunite detained immigrant parents separated from their children. The fundraiser was held Saturday June 23 at all three locations. The stores donated 20% of the day’s sales.
The donation is the idea of Avery Peregrine, a bookseller at Third Place Books Seward Park. Observing the fallout from Trump’s zero-tolerance immigrant detention policy, Peregrine recalled Third Place’s fundraiser last October for Hurricane Maria relief efforts in Puerto Rico, and suggested doing something similar for the current crisis. Managers quickly agreed.
“I’m extremely proud of the money we raised last year to aid in the relief efforts in Puerto Rico,” says Third Place managing partner Robert Sindelar. Third Place Books raised $6,585 across its three stores, which it sent to the UNIDOS Disaster Relief Fund. “I am thrilled that Avery had the instinct and intuition to suggest a similar campaign to help the children in crisis at the border.”
Book Larder, Seattle’s cookbook-focused independent bookstore, raised funds for RAICES on Sunday, July 1 with a bake sale. 100% of the money raised by the sale of tasty treats donated by local businesses, food writers, and bakers (including Dahlia Bakery, Vif, The Pantry, and past winners of the store’s bake-offs) went to the nonprofit. The bake sale was scheduled for 10:00- 1:00, but goodies sold out within an hour.
Queen Anne Book Company in Seattle is hosting a shop-for-a-cause fundraiser and awareness-raiser for nonprofit Refugee Women’s Alliance (ReWA) Wednesday night, July 11. Suzanne Kaufman, illustrator of the new picture book, All Are Welcome, will share the book (written by Alexandra Penfold) and sign. Attendees can learn more about the mission of ReWA, and the store will donate 20% of the sales from this after-hours event to ReWA. The event begins after the store’s regular hours, at 7:00 pm.
Suzanne Kaufman will also celebrate community and her latest book at University Book Store on Saturday, July 14 from 3:00- 5:00. That event is a community potluck! Feed the soul, feed the brain, feed the body.
Have you noticed something your local bookstore is doing in your community to give back and reach out? Please share!
Amazing efforts, all around, booksellers! And we’re going to keep this “All Are Welcome” theme alive. Suzanne Kaufman has confirmed she’ll be joining us for The Nightcapper event at the PNBA indie bookstore tradeshow in Tacoma!
