Today we checked in with Third Street Books’ Sylla McClellan to see how the weekend went following last Wednesday’s “Ditch Amazon” decree. McClellan says: “We had four people bring in their closed accounts – which was great. But more importantly, we had a lot of positive conversations with people about it (and great sales numbers starting on Thursday!). At the very least, it got a lot of people thinking about where they spend their money.”
And the discourse and the ditching are a national affair. The Huffington Post gave Third Street a mention along with others who are pushing back, including additional bookstores, the CEO of the American Booksellers Association and even a Senator from Maine!
After reading about Amazon’s offer, I closed my Amazon account. I didn’t buy much from them (never any books), but I disliked their money hungry tactics. I also didn’t agree with the proprietary nature of the Kindle … a person could only buy eBooks from Amazon and not from their independent bookstore.
You’ve hit all the finer points, Patti. Thanks for your attention and your action!
