Some say New York City is a “melting pot.” I think not so much. Positively scads of vastly different folks exist in close proximity. But the vastly different doesn’t go away. That’s the secret! In this book a poor kid gets mixed up with a lot of rich ones. Uptown, Downtown, Eastside, Westside … she sees it all. But by remembering her upbringing, being true to herself, and minding her manners she becomes the most fortunate (rich!) of any. Fascinating and touching.

If some booksellers are missing from your favorite bookstores next week, it may be because they’ve gone to the Big Apple to attend Book Expo America (BEA). Perhaps you’re attending BookCon? We love recommending Towles’ latest hardcover, but this paperback from Rediscovered Books or another independent bookstore will get you in a New York state of mind. (Find a flashback review here.)
