This Saturday, independent bookstores put their own twist on Small Business Saturday with Indies First. For the third year, authors support independent bookstores as they kick off the holiday season. Find a participating store near you, whether you’re in your own neighborhood or visiting family; the American Booksellers Association compiled stores celebrating Indies First on a handy map. (If you don’t see your local, do visit your favorite store’s website, too, as the indiebound map may not have every event on it.)
Here are some Pacific Northwest bookstore celebrations to inspire you to get out to shop locally:
- Third Street Books in McMinville, OR, is partnering with other local, independent businesses on a Small Business Saturday passport. Shoppers can get a passport from any participating merchant, and anyone who fills a passport and turns it in will be eligible for prizes. Third Street Books also has special tote bags, and for every $50 spent at Third Street Books that day, shoppers will receive a $10 gift certificate. Plus a special storytime!
- Time Enough Books in Ilwaco, WA offers 20% of all children’s games and books in stock.
- University Book Store, Third Place Books, and Elliott Bay Book Company in Seattle get visits from Sherman Alexie’s party bus of authors.
- Broadway Books welcomes Cheryl Strayed and many other authors throughout the day.
Happy Indies First! After you shop, share your treasures in the comments or on our Facebook page!
