I’m not typically a “reader” of cookbooks, but I found this one to be a delectably tantalizing read. The author’s introduction to the book warms the reader into submission to begin making pies. Entries throughout the book, such as Best Peach Pie in the World, are mouth-watering inspirations. Of course, I am a lover of pie (whoever isn’t needs their head examined). Unlike most cookbook authors, Kate is not a chef, does not host a TV show, does not sell pies, and is not a celebrity of any kind. Instead she is simply an ambassador of pies and teaches pie baking to folks from all over the world at her Pie Camps & Workshops. Hailing from Port Angeles on the Puget Sound Peninsula, Kate has dedicated her life to sharing her love of pie making.
Her recipes are written in straightforward language that is easy to follow. In her book she covers the gamut of pies, from fruit pies to cream pies to savory pies. If you have a pie maker in your life, give them this gift and you will be rewarded with the likes of Poached Pear Sour Cream Caramel Pie with a Crumb Topping. Or of course, you can go with The Quintessential Apple Pie. Yummmmm!

Like Brad, you, too, can support local authors and get cooking at Paulina Spring Books and other independent bookstores. [Ed. note: We love Brad’s strategy of giving this book to friends who bake in hopes of getting pie samples back. Definitely worth a try.]
Art of the Pie is a Best of the Northwest pick in the Holiday Books campaign on display at Paulina Springs and indies throughout the NW.
