On Tuesday February 3, it was announced that Harper, an imprint of HarperCollins, will publish Go Set a Watchman, a 304-page novel featuring characters from Harper’s debut– and thus far, famously only– novel, To Kill a Mockingbird, set 20 years later in the same fictional Southern town.
Although as of the writing of this post the book was not yet showing up on most independent bookstores’ websites, local stores are already taking special orders. (Most independent bookstores can take preorders as soon as a book has an ISBN assigned, and this novel has an ISBN already: 9780062409850.) The book will be available July 14, 2015. You can call or visit your favorite local store if you’re interested in reserving a copy. (We’re still waiting on a cover reveal.)
There has already been some controversy about Go Set a Watchman. Some are questioning whether Lee, who suffered a stroke in 2007 and has been in assisted living since then, truly gave consent to the publication, while others maintain that the author is sound of mind and excited to have readers connect with Scout and Atticus again.
