This can be a dangerous book to read with someone else in the room because you will be laughing out loud so often that the other person will think that you’re crazy. Told entirely through referral letters, it is good-heartedly funny but never cruel. It points out absurdities of academia, bemoaning changes in technology and faculty expectations while maintaining a light-hearted outlook. There are plenty of literary and academic in-jokes, but anyone should be able to recognize the characters, whether they need a recommendation for a literary residence or a data entry job, whether they had been given an F for plagiarism or were the professor’s favorite graduate student. A light, quick read, good for anyone who has needed a letter of recommendation that they didn’t know if they deserved, or for anyone with a post-graduate education who will probably think that the inanities in the book don’t go far enough.
