“An elderly woman shows up in Three Pines during the Christmas holidays. She thinks no one knows who she is, but someone does recognize her. When it comes time for her to leave, she is asked to come back for Christmas, but as we all know, death never takes a holiday.
“Not long after, she is found dead in her home near Montreal. Everyone has secrets and hers was a pretty big one. Inspector Gamache (my hero) is dealing with the undermining tactics of his superiors, plus the on-going struggles of his friend/colleague (and perspective son-in-law), Jean-Guy Beauvoir. Gamache heads back to Three Pines to investigate the woman’s murder and in doing so discovers a host of secrets and almost loses his job and life because of it.
“Oh how I love these mysteries!! Penny says her books are about the terror inside us all. But she also says this: “If you take only one thing away from any of my books I’d like it to be this: Goodness exists.” And through her fully realized, eccentric, funny, troubled, human characters, you come to know this is true. Highly recommended.”
