“This fun read is Deschutes County Public Library’s Novel Idea for the year. The protagonist, Karim, has come to America from Qatar to work on a Y2K project for a large firm in New York City. This project doesn’t challenge Karim’s intelligence, so he designs a successful program that predicts oil futures based on media coverage of terrorist attacks. The project kindles the interest of a CEO who perceives the potential monetary gains the program may bring his company. Written in the form of a journal, the novel is insightful and humorous as Karim learns about American culture and develops a love interest.
Face Out
Kapitoil by Teddy Wayne

I highly recommend reading this book for its pure enjoyment. You’ll have a greater understanding if you attend one or more of the many events the public library has planned during the month of April. Author Teddy Wayne will speak at the Tower Theater. There will be a discussion about Jackson Pollack (you’ll have to read the book to find out this interesting connection); a demonstration and tasting of Middle Eastern food; discussions about the acquisition of language, immigration and the beliefs and practices of the Muslim faith; as well as several other fascinating events our wonderful library staff has organized. Join county citizens in the reading and discussion of this fun and engaging book.”—Cynthia, Paulina Springs Books, with locations in Sisters and Redmond
